Research has shown that the odds of dying from heart disease rose in tandem with the percentage of sugar in the diet.

Alarmingly, Australians consume approximately 53kg of sugar each year per person.
That equates to around 29 teaspoons of sugar (both added and natural) each day.

Let's look at some simple ways you can cut back on your sugar intake:

1. Eat regularly - eating 3 meals and 2 snacks or 5 small meals each day is a great way to keep your blood sugar levels at a steady level. If you're blood sugar levels remain steady, so do your energy levels and you will be less likely to end up hungry, craving sugary snacks for an energy boost. 

This doesn’t mean you need a super-sized burger meal several times during the workday! Instead, have a snack that’s high in protein and complex carbohydrates (grains) between your regular healthy meals. Cottage cheese, fruit, tuna, yoghurt, trail mix, hard-boiled eggs, protein bars or an apple with peanut butter are all great high-protein snacks.

Ideally you want your daily blood glucose levels to look like that nice gentle wave seen in the below chart (white line) rather than the yellow line. 

2. Opt for whole foods - choose food that is as close to its original form as possible. The closer it is to its natural/original state, the less processed sugar it will contain. 

3. Include protein, good fats and spices to control sugar cravings - protein and/or good fats with each meal helps to control sugar cravings. Spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander, cardamon and cloves can help to naturally reduce cravings and will help sweeten your food without adding a heap of sugar!

4. Make time for exercise - a gym session, walk or jog, dance class, yoga (or any other form of movement!) will help to reduce tension, boost your energy and therefore reduce the need for a sugar hit. 

5. Are you getting enough sleep? If you aren't, you might be trying to counteract the exhaustion with sugar.
