New Year’s Day is the only holiday that celebrates the passage of time. It’s the perfect time to think about the past year, and how we can improve ourselves for the following year. But like most people, sticking to your goals is the hardest thing to do. Changing old habits and forming new ones take time.

Try these tips to help you along your way.

  1. Divide and Conquer.
    Focus on one goal at a time. Prioritise your list and focus on the most important first. Then divide each of those goals into smaller tasks. Give yourself a deadline for each task and work your way down the list. Changing one habit is hard enough, let alone an entire list of habits. Pat yourself on the back after each little win!
  2. Hashtag (#) Winning.
    Share your success on your social media page. If you aren’t online, designate a friend, mentor, or companion for sharing successes, monitoring progress, and offering support. The benefit of involving others in your goals and plans is instant access to experience, knowledge, and wisdom— it also raises the bar of responsibility.
  3. Better late than never.
    Don’t give up if you fall behind, or forget for a week or two. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and try again. A resolution achieved is a stunning example of consistency and hard work. Persist until you achieve the goal.
  4. Believe in yourself.
    Sometimes the only barrier to achieving your goal is your own self belief. Motivate yourself by posting inspirational notes to yourself all over the house!
