Your metabolism is at its slowest early in the morning so a healthy breakfast gives it a kick start, enabling your body to burn energy more efficiently throughout the day. Skipping meals makes your body go into lock down mode and burn less kilojoules.

Skipping breakfast causes the body to want more for lunch, as well as crave fatty and sugary foods. When you skip breakfast, the gut releases hormones that act on the orbital frontal cortex of the brain, priming it to steer your thoughts towards sugary and fatty treats.

  2. Instant porridge, low fat milk, honey and grated apple or sliced banana.

  4. Toasted sandwich with wholegrain bread - egg and tomato chutney or ham and low fat cheese, avocado and smoked salmon or cottage cheese and tomato.

  5. Fresh fruit and low fat ricotta cheese or cottage cheese. Sweeten the cheese with honey and a splash of milk.
