The Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute has launched a fantastic health event initiative which encourages you to give up your chair and stand on your feet for a day. Why? It's because the average Australian sits for 9 hours per day and this results in increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and early death.
Here's just a few reasons why we encourage you to get on board with this health initiative:
- If you sit for most of the day, your risk of heart attack is about the same as that of a smoker
- 30 minutes a day at the gym cannot counteract 7, 8 or 9 hours of sitting time
- Standing a little more each day helps tone muscles, improve posture, increase blood flow, boost metabolism and burn extra calories
