There is a LOT of information floating around at the moment about sitting, standing, stretching, moving etc at work. The short of it is, experts are warning us that sitting for too long is killing us. There is plenty of research out there reinforcing this, too.

Kansas State University, among many others, has stated that people who decrease their total sitting time and boost their levels of physical activity wind up with a lower risk of developing chronic disease (we're talking diabetes, heart disease, cancer - BIG, REAL problems).

The good news is, simply making an effort to stand throughout the day (instead of sitting for hours at a time) can improve your health and quality of life, and reduce your risk of developing chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, heart disease, breast and colon cancer.

Devoting 30-60mins of your day towards solid physical activity is fantastic (keep up the great work!) but we also need to start sitting less and moving more during our normally sedentary work days. Once you finish reading this, take a break to stand up, have a stretch and go for a brief stroll around the office.

If you stay seated, your body experiences very little muscular contraction and it shuts off a molecule called lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Usually, LPL helps to take in fat or triglycerides and use it for energy. However, if we're sitting down all day we're instructing our bodies to shut down the process that stimulates metabolism throughout the day. This is not good.

So what are you waiting for?! Take your hands away from your mouse & keyboard, and go for a walk. Enjoy!
